I picked up a pencil at the end of December in 2016. Like when man first made fire, something rather marvellous happened to my practice. It has felt like learning to draw back to front, discovering graphite again after drawing almost religiously with pen and ink for the past 15 years has taught me a lot about light and dark and storytelling.
Graphite has enabled me to be able to map out possible visual journeys in a fraction of the time it would take me using my usual methods. The full sketchbook has taken almost exactly a year to complete, so, unintentionally it has become a visual diary of wanderings both from life and from mind.
